Practical advice during a boil water advisory

We usually send out a boil water advisory as a precautionary measure to ensure the safest possible drinking water for residents. We prefer to be proactive rather than take risks.

In the event of a pipeline break, a controlled flushing by the municipality is usually sufficient. If there is uncertainty about potential contamination in the water supply, the municipality will assess whether to take a water sample and issue a boil water advisory.

A boil water advisory is always issued in consultation with the municipal chief medical officer.

Practical advice during a boil water advisory

If a boil water advisory is issued, you should follow the recommendations from Folkehelseinstituttet/the Norwegian Institute of Public Health: What should you do when you receive a boil water advisory from the waterworks?

You should boil water before using it for:

  • Drinking, mixing juice, and other beverages.
  • All food that will not be boiled or heated above 100°C.
  • Coffee, as coffee makers do not boil water—boil water separately before making coffee.
  • Ice cubes.
  • Rinsing fruit, salad, and vegetables that will not be cooked.
  • Brushing teeth.

Unboiled water can be used for:

  • Cooking food that will be boiled.
  • Handwashing: Wash hands with soap, rinse, and dry properly.
  • Showering and bathing: You can shower and bathe as usual during a boil water advisory. If you have a weakened immune system or open wounds, it is recommended to take a quick shower and dry off thoroughly afterward. Avoid swallowing water, and be extra cautious with small children.
  • Washing dishes by hand or using a dishwasher.
  • Doing laundry and general household cleaning.
  • Other domestic uses.
